KAI

KAI Kompetenzzentrum Automobil- und Industrieelektronik GmbH (KAI Automobile and Industry Electronics Competence Center) was founded by Infineon Technologies Austria AG and other industrial and academic partners in 2006 as an industrial competence center within the Austrian competence center scheme K-ind. It has been funded jointly by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG and the Carinthian Economic Promotion Fund KWF.

Today, KAI is a legally independent, 100% subsidiary of Infineon Technologies Austria AG. It is a well-established industrial research center with a broad national and international network of industrial and academic partners.

In addition to core competencies in the areas of development of power electronics reliability test concepts, advanced semiconductor materials research, statistical lifetime modeling and multiphysics FEM simulation, KAI maintains a well-equipped electronics laboratory and state-of-the-art simulation computing resources and also has experience in coordinating interdisciplinary research projects.

Current research projects focus on:

  • Physical understanding of microstructural defects and their role in the performance and reliability of power semiconductors
  • Characterization and modeling of the temperature-dependent mechanical properties of metals and interfaces
  • Characterization and modeling of the thermomechanical robustness of power semiconductor devices under active cycling
  • Mechanisms, quantitative assessment and prevention of corrosion, and analysis and synthesis of passivation layers
  • Development of application-relevant stress test concepts and systems with flexible real-time automation and data acquisition
  • Data Science and Computer Vision Methods
