CIME

The Carinthia Institute for Microelectronics (CIME) is a center of expertise for the research and development of integrated electronic systems. CIME is closely associated with the Integrated Systems and Circuits Design (ISCD) degree program, and networks with other programs within the Department of Engineering & IT at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences.

Integrated circuits (IC) have become a key piece of technology for modern electronic systems and are embedded in almost every aspect of our daily life - ranging from data processing, telecommunications, medical electronics, and automotive and power electronics, to any kind of miniaturized sensor networks. The monolithic integration of billions of transistors on a single silicon chip with an area of a few square centimeters allows for reliable and cost-efficient electronic platforms with enormous computing and signal processing power for future electronics.

Research into integrated electronic circuits and systems is a well-established discipline at the institute, which began during the early days of Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (CUAS). The work is funded by both industry partners as well as through national and European projects, and researchers have been cooperatively studying wireless communication, wireline communication, and integrated sensor front ends for more than twenty years.

CIME is a competent research partner that is strongly aligned to industry needs and has a clear focus on internationally visible research excellence. It is also based on the research of the Josef Ressel Center’s “Interact” project which was operated at CUAS until 2019. The master’s degree program “Integrated Systems and Circuits Design – ISCD” and PhD positions in cooperation with other universities help support people in gaining the required relevant knowledge and education in the field of microelectronics.
