The Mini Educational Lab, which opened in autumn 2024 at the tpv Technology Park Villach, has proven to be a resounding success. Since its launch, thousands of children from across Carinthia have explored the world of STEM subjects in a playful and engaging way.

On the occasion of World Education Day this coming Saturday, the City of Villach is highlighting its pioneering role in STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Founded in September 2024 in cooperation with the Carinthian Economic Promotion Fund, the Mini Educational Lab (MEL) is a unique educational facility in Austria. It is specifically designed to meet the learning needs of children aged three to six. In addition, young researchers learn how to use resources responsibly.

Just over a year after opening, the first assessment is extremely positive. “Since its opening, 10,000 children have already visited the Mini Educational Lab. Attendance is twice as high as originally expected,” says Mayor Günther Albel. The Province of Carinthia is also actively involved. “It is particularly encouraging to see the strong interest from kindergartens all over Carinthia. The catchment area now extends from Völkermarkt to Mallnitz,” adds Peter Reichmann, Provincial Councillor for Education.

“STEM education should be as naturally embedded in early childhood education as singing or physical activity. That’s why all kindergartens in Villach will be STEM-certified.”

STEM education in early childhood is a key factor in achieving genuine equal opportunities. “Girls are just as talented in these fields as boys. They need encouragement and equal opportunities to develop their abilities,” says Deputy Mayor and Education Councillor Sarah Katholnig. To reach as many kindergartens across Carinthia as possible, MEL coordinator Alexander Treffner travels throughout the province, offering engaging introductory modules.
