KAI Kompetenzzentrum Automobil- und Industrieelektronik GmbH (KAI Automobile and Industry Electronics Competence Center) is a legally independent subsidiary that is 100% owned by Infineon Technologies Austria AG. It is an established industrial research center with an extensive national and international network of industrial and academic partners. In addition to its core competencies in developing test concepts for the reliability testing of power electronics, researching advanced semiconductor materials, statistical lifetime modeling, and multiphysics FEM simulation, KAI operates a well-equipped electronics laboratory, cutting-edge simulation computing resources, and has extensive experience in coordinating interdisciplinary research projects.
Current research projects focus on:
- Gaining a physical understanding of microstructural defects and their impact on the performance and reliability of power semiconductors
- Characterizing and modeling the temperature-dependent mechanical properties of metals and interfaces
- Characterizing and modeling the thermomechanical robustness of power semiconductor devices under active cycling loads
- Investigating mechanisms, quantitative assessment, and prevention of corrosion, as well as the analysis and synthesis of passivation layers
- Developing application-oriented stress test concepts and systems with flexible real-time automation and data acquisition
- Applying data science and computer vision methods
KAI Kompetenzzentrum Automobil- und Industrieelektronik GmbH was founded in 2006 by Infineon along with other industry and academic partners as an industrial competence center within the framework of the Austrian COMET (formerly K-ind) competence center program. Funding was provided by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft – FFG) and the Carinthian Economic Promotion Fund (Kärntner Wirtschaftsförderungsfonds – KWF).
